Gardner Edgerton High School dominated its home 6A regional Feb. 18 and qualified nine wrestlers for the 6A state meet in Wichita, this weekend.
Four Blazers won regional titles and helped GEHS outscore runner-up Olathe North 174-118. Blue Valley West was a distant third with 108 points.
“We got eight in the regional final,” said coach Matt Yeamans. “We’d like to qualify all 14, but the nine guys we have going will work hard to get on the medal stand at State.”
Senior T.J. Stokes posted an exciting gold medal win at 126 pounds. He pinned Blue Valley North’s Danny Widrig using a leg cradle.
Senior Brent Berends improved to 29-14 with another title at 132 pounds. He decisioned his Olathe South opponent, 7-2.
At 145 pounds, sophomore Dustin Williams, 37-3, pinned his way to the title. In the championship bout he pinned Mike Wurts of Olathe North.
Not to be outdone, senior Alex Stockton, 39-3, pinned his 195-pound opponent. Stockton now has 35 pins on the season and is tied for eighth, all time in Kansas history.
Other qualifiers included senior Ryan Fitzpatrick (2nd at 120 pounds); senior Austin Keehn (3rd at 152 pounds); senior Justin Long (2nd at 160 pounds); freshman Seth Pesek (2nd at 170 pounds); and freshman Emilio Fowler (2nd at 182 pounds).
