‘Blazer squad readies for big televised rivalry match

When the Saints come marching into town this Friday for the much-anticipated televised match-up with the Gardner Edgerton High School football team the ‘Blazers will have no trouble maintaining focus.

According to GEHS coach Marvin Diener, the team is ready to face-off against league rival St. Thomas Aquinas and the distraction of a nationally televised game on ESPN won’t throw the Trailblazers for a loop.

“Really it’s not very hard (to stay focused),” said Diener.  “We’re excited about the game, make no mistake about that, aside from the ESPN part of it, this is a very important game for us in regards to qualifying for the playoffs.

For St. Thomas Aquinas, if they aren’t able to win the game their playoff hopes are over.  If we win the game we’re in the playoffs, so our kids are very, very focused about trying to get this win.”

While the team is excited that their program has been elevated to a national level, they are not strangers to playing in big games, or to appearing in front of a televised audience.  Previously the team has had games featured on Metro Sports and Cox.  Next week’s game between the ‘Blazers and Blue Valley will be shown on Metro Sports.

GEHS, now 7-0 on the season will take on Saint Thomas Aquinas, 5-2 at the District Activities Complex Friday, Oct. 22.  Kick-off will be at 7 p.m., gates open for tailgating at 5 p.m.  Tickets can be pre-purchased through Friday at noon at GEHS.  The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
