A second half rally fell just short and the Blazers dropped a hard fought 49-42 decision at Blue Valley Southwest High School, Dec. 14.
Southwest, 5-0, jumped to a 13-6 first quarter lead behind the shooting of senior guard Colton Miller. The Timberwolves seemed secure at halftime with a 27-17 lead.
Back came the Blazers with two quick third quarter baskets by Ben Carpenter and Matt Plank to pull within 27-21. Carpenter was the catalyst for a 14-5 third quarter run to pull the Blazers within a point at 32-31. However, Southwest regrouped and secured their fifth win of the season with a 17-10 fourth quarter run.
“I was real happy how we made adjustments at halftime and showed heart and got back in the game,” said Coach Jeff Langrehr. “The kids played hard and never gave up.”
Despite the loss, Kyle Huppe led the scoring with 16 points, including two treys. Carpenter collected 10 points and Matt Plank ,six. Josh Lang had five points while Traevohn Wrench and Dilon Dodson had two points. Kyle Hultgren had one point.
It was a different story Dec. 11 as GEHS got 19 points from Huppe and turned back the Eagles of Olathe North in a 56-42 home court win.
The Blazers took control of this one early going on a 15-0 first quarter run and went up 20-7 at quarters end. GEHS held a 28-16 lead at halftime.
“We have been playing well as a team the past 10 quarters and were able to use our match ups,” added Langrehr. We ran the game plan well.”
The Blazers kept up the offensive assault in the second half holding a 52-40 lead with just 2:19 remaining in the game. A pair of free throws by Josh Lang with 1:09 left sealed the Blazers second win of the season.
Once again, Huppe led the way with a team high 19 points, including 10 points in the fourth quarter. Next came Carpenter with nine points and DilonDodson,eight. Wrench added six , Brett Wright ,five and Josh Lang, four. Jamain Lang had three points and Plank,two points.
Now 2-2, the Blazers remained home to host the Mustangs of Blue Valley North Dec 20. Results were not available at press time.
