Led by seniors Jared Hobby and Traevohn Wrench, the Blazer football squad begins its season at rival Blue Valley, Sept. 6th.
It is the metro game of the week and kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
“The expectations are high for this team,” said coach Marvin Diener, now in his eighth year at the Blazer helm. “We are pleased with the progress made in pre season and look forward to making a deep run in the 6A state playoffs.”
Diener will look to senior quarterback Jared Hobby to guide his group. Hobby earned honorable mention All Eastern Kansas League last season completing 90 of 172 passes for 1326 yards and 12 touchdowns.
The Blazers’ run game starts with Wrench. Last year he carried the ball 256 times for 2,269 yards and 25 touchdowns. He scored 154 total points.
Those numbers earned Wrench a top 11 All-Class honor from the Wichita Eagle and Topeka Capital-Journal. He was a first team all-metro selection and first team all- east Kansas league selection.
The Blazers offensive line will have three returning starters and great confidence in its two guard positions. The line is prepared to make a quicker start than the previous two seasons.
Defensively, the Blazers return four starters from last season. The line returns two starters and will be blessed with size and depth.
Dustin Williams returns for his senior season at linebacker and Tommy McLennan is the only starter in the secondary.
The Blazers have many new faces on the defensive side and the biggest concern will be how the back seven defend the pass against Blue Valley.
First test comes Sept. 6th, 7 p.m. on the Tigers field in Blue Valley.
