Braving cold, windy conditions, the Blazer boys track team brought back first place honors from the Shawnee Mission South Invitational April 12.
Boasting four individual champions and one relay champion, the Blazers outpointed runnerup Olathe South 109-104. Shawnee Mission Northwest had 99, Blue Valley Northwest, 71 and Shawnee Mission South, 67.
“I was real proud of the kids effort,”said Coach Brian McGee. “Everyone stepped up their effort and competed well. We showed a lot of improvement.”
Seniors Ben Carpenter, Travis Reed and Matt Mayeske led the gold medal parade. Carpenter cleared a season best pole vault of 14’-0” while Mayeske claimed 110 meter hurdles ( 15.5) and 300 hurdles (41.6) titles.
Meanwhile, the 400-relay team of Dakota Steuber, Marcon Waters, Jaylon Radel and Traevohn Wrench took first in a time of 44.1.
Wrench earned a silver medal in the 100 meter dash in 11.59 and Dalton Shump sailed 19”-9” in the long jump. Travis Reed threw the javelin a season best 163”-4” for second place. Waters earned a bronze medal in the 400-meter dash in 52.88.
