Mary Emma Kennon

Mary Emma Kennon, 83, of Gardner, Kan passed away April 15, 2017 at Olathe Medical Center. Mary was born March 2, 1934 in Brewton, Ala. to Sam L. and Vera Mae (Cooper) Coon. She grew up in Alabama where she graduated from high school. Mary married Walter Scott Kennon on Aug. 1, 1952 in Birmingham, Ala. They have lived in Overland Park, Olathe and moved to Gardner in 1980. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church, Gardner. Mary enjoyed teaching children, riding Harley Davidson motorcycles, cooking and camping. She loved to take family pictures and organize them in order to document family events. Mary will be missed by family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings: Dorothy Greene, Vera Creel, Janice Royster, Sam Koone and Ernestine Hart. Kenneth Eugene Gillihan

Kenneth Eugene Gillihan, 71, passed away April 15, 2017, at his home in Bucyrus, Kan. Ken was born November 19, 1945 in Gardner to Mary Rose (Loftus) and Hobart Robert Gillihan. He was a 1964 graduate of Edgerton High School. He was a Vietnam veteran and served for two years in the U. S. Army. Ken married Kathie Sue Bowman on August 16, 1974 in Prairie Village, Kan. They lived in De Soto, Overland Park and then moved to Bucyrus in 1986. He worked for General Motors in KCKS as an assembly auto worker for 31 years, retiring in 2000. Ken also worked for the Kansas Dept. of Wildlife. He was a member of the VFW Gardner Post 11234 and the American Legion Post 0250. Ken’s past-times included his vegetable gardens, helping his neighbors, tending to his cows, assisting his son-in-law Travis on his farm and his annual fishing trips with his son-in-law Patrick. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife. Ken was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandsons, and he will be dearly missed. Isabel Costa Hager

Isabel Costa Hager, 98, of Olathe, Kan passed away at Villa St. Francis in Olathe. Isabel was born March 11, 1919 in Barcelona, Spain to Rosendo and Alberta (Elias) Costa. She grew up and was educated in Barcelona. Isabel owned and operated Peninsula Electrolysis Clinic in Foster City, Calif. During WWII she was an announcer for the British Broadcasting Corporation and an ambulance driver. Later in Madrid, she was an on-air host of a variety TV show and a talent agent. Isabel married Lawrence Delbert Hager on June 1, 1957 in Lake Worth, Fla. They moved to Olathe in 2008. Isabel was Catholic and attended services regularly at the Villa St. Francis Chapel in Olathe. She was a devoted dog owner and lover. Isabel was a traditional Catalan lady and was a gracious host and loved to entertain in her home. She was an accomplished oil painting artist. Isabel was a fashionista with a love for having her nails, hair and makeup done and had a large closet with many outfits. Bella had a talent for languages by being fluent in many. She will be missed by family and friends. Max Erwin Gibson, Sr., 75, of Gardner, Kan passed away April 6, 2017 at the Olathe Hospice House. Max was born October 9, 1941 in Humboldt, Kan to Charles and Mary (Marler) Gibson. He grew up in Humboldt, where he later graduated high school. Max then joined the United States Marine Corps. Woman charged in toddler’s death

On April 4, the Gardner Police Department arrested Lindsey Nichole Thomasson in connection with the February 7, 2017, death of two-year-old Gardner resident Presley Porting, according to Jim Pruetting, Gardner police chief. Thomasson resided with the victim and the victim’s biological father at the time of her death. Thomasson is charged with first degree murder and is currently being held at the Johnson County Jail with a $2 million dollar bond. CHARLENE FAYE TURNER

Charlene Faye Turner, 82, of Gardner, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2017 at Olathe Medical Center. Charlene was born April 12, 1934 in Garden City, Mo to Verna Faye (Leavell) and Charles Allen Kenagy. She was a graduate of Garden City, High School. Charlene married Lloyd E. Turner in KCMO in 1959. They lived in KCMO, Overland Park, Kan and she moved to Gardner in 2007 to be near her family. She attended the First Baptist Church of OP and then New Life Community Church in Gardner for the last five years. She was an avid KC Royals and KU basketball fan. Charlene loved her family dearly and loved attending all of their activities. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lloyd, infant son William Allen Turner and siblings Norman Kenagy and Beth Kenagy. RICHARD G. STABLEIN

Richard George “Dick” Stablein, 85, of Gardner, KS, passed away March 26, 2017 at Villa St. Francis in Olathe, Kan. Dick was born May 9, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio to Paul Stablein, Sr. and Katherine (Wagner) Stablein. His family moved to Kansas City, Mo in 1936. Dick graduated from Hogan High School and attended Rockhurst College for a couple of years until he joined the U.S. Navy. After his service in the Navy he attended Marquette University from which he graduated in 1959 with an Electrical Engineering degree. He worked as a Test Engineer at Bendix Corporation (later Allied Signal) for his entire career. Dick was actively involved in many organizations throughout his life, including IEEE, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, KC Ski Club, Mended Hearts, United States Power Squadron and the Lake Association. He was a devout Catholic and attended St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Catholic Church, as well as, Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Gardner. He recently received recognition from the Knights of Columbus for lifetime membership. Dick enjoyed life and was able in his lifetime to travel the world with family and friends. He enjoyed golf, sailing, reading, watching old movies and telling stories of the olden days to his great nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents. Minnie Mabel Stewart Ashmore, 83, of Gardner in Johnson County, passed away on March 11, 2017 at 8 am in the grace and care of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and under the watchful eyes of many excellent medical staff workers at Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Center. Shawnee, Gardner, KS 66030 Minnie was born on July 26th of 1933 to Amos Eugene Sr. and Lois Marguerite (Gray) Stewart in rural Monroe County, Iowa. She was named after both of her grandmothers and was the fifth child of what would become eight. Being born in the depression would shape many of Minnie’s character traits. She was a farmer’s daughter and had strong and extreme work ethics. She worked with cattle, pigs, chickens and horses while helping to bake for the men on the farm and then would take her turn in the field helping to produce various crops. She could handle any form of machinery, cook, can and was an excellent seamstress. In her youth, she was involved with 4-H and Grange and was athletic and extremely competitive. Maxine (Fraser) Bacon

Maxine (Fraser) Bacon, 97, passed away March 8, 2017. Maxine was born in rural Gardner, Kan on Oct. 1, 1919 to William H. and Lelia (Reid) Fraser. Maxine was a lifelong resident of the area. She graduated from Gardner High School in 1937 as Salutatorian of her class. After graduation she went to work at Cramer Chemical Co. and worked there until she got married. Maxine married Ray Bacon on Aug. 23, 1941 in Las Vegas, Nev. In 1959 she started working at the Gardner school cafeteria as a dishwasher and worked her way up to Food Service Supervisor in 1973. She retired from the Gardner School District in 1982. Besides working outside the home, she also helped Ray on the farm until they retired from farming in 1998. Maxine was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Gardner and was Past Worthy Matron of the Gardner Order of Eastern Star. She was an avid baker of cookies, pies and cinnamon rolls, an excellent seamstress and enjoyed making a variety of crafts. She will be dearly missed by family and friends. Lee Cooper Peters, 77, of Gardner, Kan passed away March 5, 2017 at Olathe Med. Center. Lee was born Oct. 27, 1939 in Coronado, Calif to Maurice Albert and Gayle Estelle (Cooper) Peters. He moved frequently while growing up as his father was in the military. His father’s last military assignment was to the Olathe Naval Air Station where they settled in Gardner. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Beth Davis on Oct. 11, 1958. Lee was a 1957 graduate of Gardner High School; received his BS in Business from Ottawa Univ. and earned an MBA from Webster Univ. His career path included stints at Cramer Products, Gardner Medical Center, Legal Administrator at the Law Office of Morris, Larson and King, ending his career retiring as Executive Director for Hunkeler Eye Center in 1997. Lee was a member of various civic and charitable organizations, including member/president of the Gardner Jaycees, served on the Gardner City Council and once served as President of the Gardner Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gardner. Lee had many hobbies that kept him constantly occupied.
