Minnie Mabel Stewart Ashmore, 83, of Gardner in Johnson County, passed away on March 11, 2017 at 8 am in the grace and care of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and under the watchful eyes of many excellent medical staff workers at Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Center. Funeral Service will be 11:00 am Friday, March 17, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church, 138 E. Shawnee, Gardner, KS 66030 Minnie was born on July 26th of 1933 to Amos Eugene Sr. and Lois Marguerite (Gray) Stewart in rural Monroe County, Iowa. She was named after both of her grandmothers and was the fifth child of what would become eight. Being born in the depression would shape many of Minnie’s character traits. She was a farmer’s daughter and had strong and extreme work ethics. She worked with cattle, pigs, chickens and horses while helping to bake for the men on the farm and then would take her turn in the field helping to produce various crops. She could handle any form of machinery, cook, can and was an excellent seamstress. In her youth, she was involved with 4-H and Grange and was athletic and extremely competitive. Minnie loved horseback riding, riding bikes and playing softball, volleyball and badminton. Maxine (Fraser) Bacon

Maxine (Fraser) Bacon, 97, passed away March 8, 2017. Maxine was born in rural Gardner, Kan on Oct. 1, 1919 to William H. and Lelia (Reid) Fraser. Maxine was a lifelong resident of the area. She graduated from Gardner High School in 1937 as Salutatorian of her class. After graduation she went to work at Cramer Chemical Co. and worked there until she got married. Maxine married Ray Bacon on Aug. 23, 1941 in Las Vegas, Nev. In 1959 she started working at the Gardner school cafeteria as a dishwasher and worked her way up to Food Service Supervisor in 1973. She retired from the Gardner School District in 1982. Besides working outside the home, she also helped Ray on the farm until they retired from farming in 1998. Maxine was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Gardner and was Past Worthy Matron of the Gardner Order of Eastern Star. She was an avid baker of cookies, pies and cinnamon rolls, an excellent seamstress and enjoyed making a variety of crafts. She will be dearly missed by family and friends. Lee Cooper Peters, 77, of Gardner, Kan passed away March 5, 2017 at Olathe Med. Center. Lee was born Oct. 27, 1939 in Coronado, Calif to Maurice Albert and Gayle Estelle (Cooper) Peters. He moved frequently while growing up as his father was in the military. His father’s last military assignment was to the Olathe Naval Air Station where they settled in Gardner. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Beth Davis on Oct. 11, 1958. Lee was a 1957 graduate of Gardner High School; received his BS in Business from Ottawa Univ. and earned an MBA from Webster Univ. His career path included stints at Cramer Products, Gardner Medical Center, Legal Administrator at the Law Office of Morris, Larson and King, ending his career retiring as Executive Director for Hunkeler Eye Center in 1997. Lee was a member of various civic and charitable organizations, including member/president of the Gardner Jaycees, served on the Gardner City Council and once served as President of the Gardner Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gardner. Lee had many hobbies that kept him constantly occupied. He was a highly skilled amateur woodworker who produced professional quality products in his wood shop. Elder George A. “Pop” Miller, 83, of Olathe passed away on Feb. 24, 2017 at Olathe Medical Center. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2017 from 5-9 p.m. at the McGilley & Frye Funeral Home at 105 E. Loula St., Olathe. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 10, 2017 from 10-12:30 p.m. at the Gardner Church of the Nazarene at 16640 N. Moonlight Rd., Gardner. Burial will follow at the Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth. George was born on Sept. 29, 1933, in Webb, Mississippi. He was the youngest of 12 children. He served and retired with honors in the U.S. Army in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He had a Bachelor’s degree in Food Service Management and retired from USD 233 in the food service department. Elder Miller was a scholar of the Word of the Lord. He was the Pastor of Reaching Out for Souls Church in Gardner, which was founded by he and his wife Kathryn. Ralph Henry VanGoethem

Ralph Henry VanGoethem, 87, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, formerly a resident of Kansas for 74 years, passed away in his home on Sunday evening, February 19, 2017, after a courageous battle from a series of illnesses. Services were held at St Pius X Catholic Church Friday, February 24, 2017. Ralph was born the third of 8 children to Julien and Clare (Harrington) VanGoethem in a Gardner farm house on January 16, 1930. He attended a one room school house and then graduated from Gardner High School in 1947 and completed Coyne Electrical School (Chicago) in 1948. He was a US Marine Corps Veteran, serving as staff sergeant until 1953 in the First Marine Air Wing during the Korean Conflict. Ralph married Jeanette E. Reliford on December 12, 1953. Ralph worked 44 years in electrical construction where he was President of KC Electrical Construction Company of North Kansas City from 1965 until his retirement in 1992. Ralph was the NECA chapter president of Greater KC, president of the North Kansas City Rotary Club, a member of Knights of Columbus, and active in the Boy Scouts of America. Cameron Kirchner, 18, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017. Cameron was born July 12, 1998 in Olathe to Melissa Kay Howard and Christopher Eugene Kirchner. He grew up in De Soto and Gardner, attending Gardner Edgerton High School and was a 2016 graduate from Lawrence Virtual School. Cameron was a mechanic and he worked in Kansas and Missouri for Icon Window Washer, a company headquartered in St. Louis. He enjoyed fishing, playing soccer, working on cars and tinkering with electrical items. Cameron loved helping people. He was very close to his brother and helped him in many ways. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Issiah “Jamon” Turner Pendergrass, 18, of Gardner, Kan passed away February 18, 2017. Jamon was born April 7, 1998 in West Plains, Mo to Misty Lea (Pendergrass) Gant and Christopher William Turner. He moved to Gardner when he was eight and he was a 2016 graduate of Gardner Edgerton High School. He was an insulator for GFI in Lawrence, KS. Jamon previously was a pizza artist for Pie 5 and Papa Murphy’s. He played basketball and football at Wheatridge Middle School. At Gardner Edgerton High School he became involved in the theatre department. He enjoyed drawing sketches, playing the guitar and writing poems. Jamon was known by all who knew and loved him for the light that came from within him, his infectious smile and his ability and desire to help anyone who needed his help. Wanda Irene Meek, 89, passed away February 19, 2017, at Assisted Life Styles of BlackHawk in Spring Hill, Kan. Wanda was born in Spring Hill on January 10, 1928 to Frona (Coffey) and Howard Isaac Skinner. She was a lifetime area resident and graduated from Spring Hill High School in 1945. Wanda married Ernest H. Meek on April 29, 1946 in Olathe, KS. To them were born four children. She loved having all the family together. Wanda enjoyed sewing, working with flowers, music, using the computer, cooking and serving her Lord. She was a secretary at school for nine years and a church secretary for five years. She also worked for 10 years at the Johnson County Courthouse. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ernest, son Ernest Alan, daughter Bonnie Jean, granddaughter Jennifer Meek and brothers Clifford, Lester, Virgil, Homer and Howard Skinner. Wanda is survived by her children John and Janet Meek of Lacon, Ill, and Stephen Meek of S. D; son-in-law Gary Landes of Hillsdale, Kan; six grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. Dennis “Denny” LaVern Pritchard, 62, of Gardner, Kan passed away Feb. 14, 2017 at Veteran’s Hospital, KCMO. Denny was born May 23, 1954 in Austin, TX to Dale “Sandy” Allen and Mary Opal (Klamm) Pritchard. He was a life-long area resident of Johnson County and a graduate of Gardner Edgerton High School. Denny was a Seabee with the United States Navy. He was a retired member of the Ironworkers Union, Local #10 where he worked as a rod man. After retiring, he worked as a truck driver. Denny was an avid sports fan, loved leatherworking, and playing cards. He started game playing at the Mill Creek Activity Center. Denny loved his family and was very proud of them. Maxine (Brewer) Sumner

Maxine (Brewer) Sumner, 82, of Spring Hill Kan passed away February 4, 2017, surrounded by her family. Maxine was born on November 25, 1934 in Miami County, Kan to Geneva and Bert Brewer. She grew up in Drexel, Mo as the youngest of seven children. Maxine married Dennis Sumner on March 26, 1955 in Paola, Kan. They made their home in Spring Hill, Kan. Maxine was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was on a bowling league and a softball team. Maxine loved playing games at the Civic Center and especially enjoyed playing games with her family. She loved working in the yard and always had to keep herself busy. Maxine worked in the high school cafeteria and for 28 years as a waitress in Spring Hill and Olathe. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Spring Hill and the Spring Hill United Methodist Church. Maxine will be dearly missed by family and friends. Gerald “Gerry” Eugene Braun

Gerald “Gerry” Eugene Braun, 92, of Lee’s Summit, MO, passed away Feb. 11, 2017. Gerry was born Sept. 23, 1924 in Kansas City, Kan to Ernest George and Maurine (Kelly) Braun. He grew up in Edgerton, one of six children, and was a 1942 graduate of Edgerton High School. Gerry met his future wife, Kathleen E. Murphy, in second grade and they married on April 27, 1946 in Edgerton.. They traveled extensively while Gerry served 20 years in the US Marine Corps. After retiring from the US Marines Corp, Gerry and Kay settled in Independence, Mo, where Gerry pursued a career with Farmers Insurance Group, and they continued their traveling. He was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion of Independence, Mo. Gerry was loved very much. A practical and unpretentious man, he touched many people’s lives and made many friends along the way with his wit and wisdom.
