VIRGINIA H. WALLACE

Virginia H. Wallace, 61, of Olathe, Kan passed away September 17, 2016 at her home. Virginia was born June 14, 1955 in St. Louis, Mo to Lois May (Collins) and Lewis Forbes. She was a graduate of Climax Springs High School in Climax Springs, Mo. Virginia married James Kenneth Wallace on January 5, 1974 in Warsaw, Mo. She was a member of the College Church of the Nazarene. She ran a daycare for many years and helped Jim with all aspects of running the church. Through her time with the church she helped save many lives and was a faith servant. She planted God’s seed in so many families that will take hold. Virginia will be dearly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Marjorie and John. Virginia is survived by her husband James of the home; children Michele Gamm and Ron, Aimee Wilkins and Shane and Joseph Wallace and Michelle, all of Gardner; siblings Nancy, Lew, Grace, Patricia and Barbara; 9 grandchildren: Christopher, Britney, Haley, Alexis, Brooklyn, Mackenzie, Isaiah, Jonah, and Victoria. Laura Celia Rivera, 62, of Gardner, Kan passed away Sept. 15, 2016 at Pinnacle Ridge Nursing Home. Laura was born April 15, 1954 in New York, N.Y. to Ralph Michael and Nina Sally (Floryan) Rivera. She graduated from George Washington High School in New York, N.Y. Laura will be remembered for her kind acts of generosity. She loved to cook, crochet and knit and enjoyed playing guitar and piano. Laura will be dearly missed by family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Augie “Jr” Portugal. JOYCE ARLENE SMITH

Joyce Arlene Smith, 78, passed away September 3, 2016 at Olathe Hospice House. Joyce was born February 4, 1938 in Muskegon, Mich to Vivian Goldie (Huff) and John Sagner Johnson. She was a graduate of Ravenna High School in Mich and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from CSUDH in 1985. Joyce retired as an accountant having worked for the General and local Nazarene Church. She lived in California from 1966 until 1991 when she moved to Olathe to be with her family. She was a member of the Gardner Church of the Nazarene. Joyce served as church pianist for many churches throughout her life. She was a Lay Counselor and enjoyed mentoring in her church. She will be dearly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Arnold L Johnson. Joyce is survived by her children: Terrell Wayne Smith and Leora of Olathe, Kevin Lee Smith and Antoinette of San Pedro, Calif, and Linda Rae Massei and John of Torrance, Calif; eight grandchildren; one great granddaughter; siblings Barbara E Kiefer of Ft. Bernard Eugene Cox

Bernard Eugene Cox, 81, passed away September 2, 2016 at Prairie Elder Homes in Overland Park. Bernard was born October 20, 1934 in LaCygne, Kan to Ruth F. (Worlein) and John Eugene Cox. He grew up in Paola and was a 1952 graduate of Paola High School. He served in the National Guard. Bernard married Agnes Mary Curtis on November 12, 1955 in Paola, Kan. They moved to Spring Hill in 1969. He retired from his position of Cost Engineer for Bendix in KcMo. He also farmed and raised cattle. He was continuously tinkering. Bernard enjoyed hunting, playing golf, and mushroom hunting, as well as antique cars. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus. He will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Jeanine, and brother Kenneth Cox. Bernard is survived by his wife Agnes; children: Jana Youngman and David of Olathe, Jon Cox of Spring Hill, James Cox and Shirley of Gardner, and Judy Nelson and Ron of Hernando, Miss; grandchildren: Justin, Derek, Tylor, Colten, Abby, Cooper, Jennifer and Jamie; and one great grandson, Thomas A. Peggy P. Deaton, 81, of Gardner, Kan passed away on August 29, 2016 at her home. She was born on October 31, 1934 . Peggy enjoyed working for Towner Furry and caring for alzheimer’s patients as a home healthcare nurse for many years before retiring. On March 23, 1957, she married Harold Keith Deaton and they made their home in Olathe, Kan. She was a member of the Commission on Aging, the Athena Club and other various community organizations and educational committees. Peggy is survived by her loving husband, Harold Keith Deaton, sons, Nevin Deaton and Jason Deaton, daughter-in-law, Deanna, and grandchildren Daniel and Marie. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anna Barnes and Clarence Dunlap. Karl Chester Hines, 58, of Olathe, Kan, passed away August 31, 2016 at Olathe Hospice House. Karl was born December 13, 1957 in Independence, Mo to Norma Jane Hines (Berry) and Thomas K. Hines. He grew up in Kansas, Texas and Missouri and moved back to Olathe, KS in the late 1970’s. Karl was a 1976 graduate of Fulton, Mo High School. He married Barbara Jean Mullin on October 28, 1978 in Olathe. They continued to live in Olathe. Karl owned Hines Boys Flatwork Inc. The Olathe company did concrete finishing for 30 years. For the last three years he worked for TSV Excavation Co in Olathe. He was a member and Trustee for the Spring Hill Baptist Church. He and Barbara founded Spring Hill’s Christmas in October. He was a member of the Heart of America Wing for over a decade, where he donated his time and vast airplane knowledge. Karl coached softball, baseball and basketball for local youth. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and waterskiing. Karl loved to fly his WWII Fairchild PT-19. He will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents. Peter Alan Caffrey

Peter Alan Caffrey died at his home on August 29 in Gardner, Kan at the age of 73. Pete was born on December 19, 1942 in Irvington, N.J. He graduated from Southeast Missouri State College in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He married Sonda in 1967. Pete was a natural salesperson, eventually serving as president of his own medical sales corporation, Pete Caffrey & Associates and the Mid-America Alpaca Foundation. Pete and his family moved to a small farm in Gardner, Kan in 1981 where he raised alpacas, horses, goats, chickens, and of course, his beloved dogs. He loved reading, fly fishing, working outdoors. Pete is survived by his loving wife, Sonda Hillis Caffrey ,Gardner, Kan, daughter, Melissa (Sean) Campbell, son, Matthew ,Betsy Caffrey, and five grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father Matthew, mother Edythe, brother James, and granddaughter Katie. Arthur LaVern Sawyer

Arthur LaVern Sawyer, 93, of Gardner, passed away August 29, 2016 at Wellsville Retirement Community. LaVern was born March 7, 1923 in Gardner, Kan to Fred St. Clair and Lola M. (Kennedy) Sawyer. He attended Gardner High School. After high school he farmed and raised cattle. LaVern married Gera Johnson, February 14, 1944 in Gardner. He worked for KCP&L in Overland Park for 38 years as a driver and clerk. After retirement, he started Two Trails Real Estate in Gardner and later started restoring antique tractors. LaVern was a life-long Gardner resident and longtime member of the Edgerton United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Docey-Dandies and was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Edgerton. LaVern never knew a stranger. He will be missed by family and friends. LaVern was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gera in 2013; infant daughter, Gera Louise Sawyer; brothers: Otto, Floyd, Vernon, Harold and Dale and sister, Lucile Knabe.
