The GFWC Athena Club of Gardner met on Feb.15 at the home of Arlene Thompson. She was assisted by Doris Smith as the co-hostess. There were two guests in attendance: Cooper and Robin McGuire. Cooper was there to share the music that he would present at the District 2 Art Festival to be held in Baldwin City at Baker University. He sang two songs that he performed at the contest on Feb. 25.
The GFWC Athena club members took a collection for Penny Pigg (our piggy bank) to save funds to buy a pig through the International Program. Club members also collected money for our Scholarship project to give a $500. Scholarship to a member of the senior class of GEHS.
Club members gave reports on the various appointed committees. There was much discussion concerning our celebration of the GFWC Athena’s 90th anniversary. The Gardner GFWC Athena club was one of the very first active civic clubs in Johnson County and Kansas. We decided to celebrate this event at our regular scheduled meeting on May 16. Special guests are being contacted to join us that day from the community, and from GFWC. Members were asked the question: “How long have you been a club member?” We have two members that will be celebrating 50 years of GFWC membership.
The Athena Club is open to all for membership and we welcome you to come and check us out if you would like to be a part of a club that works to the betterment of the community we are a part of. We are a part of the Greater Federated Women’s Club which is an international club for women willing to serve through volunteer efforts. The Athena club helps in veteran’s collection, Ronald McDonald House, Safe Home, our Multi-Service Center, and many other service projects. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month. Our March meeting will be at the Johnson County Gardner Library with Minnie Ashmore as hostess.
