The Gardner Athena GFWC met at March 16 at 1 p.m. at the Gardner Branch of the Johnson County Library.
The guest speaker, Detective Brian Gressel from the Internet Crime Unit of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, spoke on identity theft and credit card fraud. He suggested several ways of making yourself less vulnerable, one of which is to get a yearly print out of your credit report so you can monitor any unusual activity. One website to receive these free reports is https://www.annualcreditreport.com Important steps to be taken if your identity is stolen is to immediately contact your credit card companies and banks, contact the fraud department, then file a report with local police.
Members answered roll call with a tip for preventing identity theft and credit card fraud which included a number of points learned from our speaker. Committee reports were given and details discussed in regard to the club’s upcoming scholarship fund auction.

The next meeting is set for 1 p.m. April 20 at the Gardner library branch. Athena welcomes all interested women of the community to join in helping with a multitude of community projects focusing on children, education, music and the arts.
