ALONG THE TRAILS: Gardner Depot

In 1870 the railroad reached Gardner.  The railroad did not follow the prairie schooners over the old Santa Fe Trail.  Instead, the railroad shunted Kane Street to an angle, first at ground level and eventually in the present deep cut.  A local stock yard was located in the area of Mulberry Street.  You ordered a “local” boxcar to ship your animal to the Kansas City Stockyards.
