An open house reception honoring Larry and Deanna Byers of Gardner in observance of their 50th wedding anniversary will be held Sunday, March 30, in Gardner. Mr. and Mrs. Byers are former residents of Osawatomie and Herington. They have lived in Gardner three years.
The open house will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Gardner Senior Center, 128 E. Park. Hosting the event will be the couple’s three children, Mike Byers and his wife, Dana, of Lindsborg; Wendy Eaton and her husband, Jim of Gardner; and Tom Byers and his wife, Tana, of Shawnee. The honorees have eight grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Byers grew up in Osawatomie. They are 1961 graduates of Osawatomie High School.
Byers worked as a community journalist for 45 years. He began his career as a general assignment reporter-photographer/sports editor for The Osawatomie Graphic. He then served as editor and publisher of The Herington Times at Herington from 1973 until he retired in 2007. In 2008, he left retirement to become a sales associate at a new Walmart store in Olathe. He retired from that position the first of this month.
Mrs. Byers is a retired registered nurse. She worked in both hospital and nursing home facilities during her career from 1964 to 2010.
Mr. and Mrs. Byers were married Feb. 29, 1964, at the First Baptist Church in Osawatomie. They moved from Osawatomie to Herington in 1973. They moved from Herington to Johnson County in 2008.
